Tandem Rating
UPT Vector/Sigma Tandem Instructor Rating
The USPA and UPT Tandem courses are typically run together. The break down for each rating is listed below.
UPT Vector/Sigma Tandem Instructor Rating
Requirements for taking the course:
- 18 years of age or older
- Logged 500 jumps on a ram-air canopy
- USPA D license or the FAI equivalent
- USPA Coach rating or higher (or FAI equivalent)
- Three years in the sport (verified by logbook)
- A current FAA Class 3 Medical
Certificate or Foreign equivalent
The Course:
- The tandem rating course will take 2 up to 3 days (weather permitting). The course consists of one day of classroom, 5 evaluation jumps and a written exam. The class starts with verification of the requirements (see above).
- After the initial 5 course evaluation jumps you need to make 5 tandem jumps with an experienced jumper who has at least 100 jumps. The Ratings Center will provide our Evaluators and Examiners for these jumps in order to better prepare you for "real world" tandems.
- You will need, the Vector Tandem Manual and Sigma Manual. We recommend you print these manuals from United Parachute Technologies website prior to the course.
- The Vector Tandem Test and Sigma Test are also available on UPT's site. We recommend you have these test complete prior to arrival to the course. (these are open book tests, the Vector Tandem test is 65 questions and the Sigma Test is 21 questions)

USPA Tandem Instructor Rating
Requirements for taking the course:
- Complete Manufacturer Rating Course
- Current USPA membership
- Complete items 1-8 on the "Tandem Instructor Proficiency Card" for Coaches, items 1-2 for Instructors
Proficiency Card:
- The "Tandem Instructor Proficiency Card" is in the back of the Tandem section of the IRM (Instructional Rating Manual). You will need a current (no older than 24 months) version of the IRM and SIM (Skydiver's Information Manual) for the course.
The Course:
- The course is 2-3 days (weather permitting). This includes classroom time, ground evaluations, and in-air evaluations.

- if you are taking the UPT Tandem Rating Course with us, we will waive the USPA Course fees

- Candidates will also be responsible for travel expenses and lodging
- UPT/USPA Tandem Courses held at Skydive Spaceland
- $1,250 per person
- this includes the Examiner fee, tandem rig rental/pack jobs (for 10 jumps), all slots for your 10 tandem training jumps and 1 solo freefall evaluation jump (USPA requirement), and DZ Facilitly Fee
